Successful Tech Hubs:
Dublin
Founded as a Viking settlement
and with a population of over 500.000 inhabitants, Dublin[1] is
Ireland’s capital and has rapidly established itself as one of Europe’s main
Tech Hubs. With 9 out of the 10 ten companies in the world established there,
Ireland offers a World Class ecosystem of both local and international tech
talent. Some of these companies include giants like Google, Facebook and
Amazon; and other less known companies such as Foodcloud, Viddyad and Storyful.
Businesses do not only choose Ireland because of it’s competitive tax rates,
but because it has a stable pro-business government. With rapid access to a
young, educated, highly educated skilled workforce and a strong commitment to
the EU. It is a great environment for companies to be created, but also for the
establishment of new companies. It is a great place to network and to find
people that you can create relationships with. That can be an advantage in a
small city, but as long as the culture is open minded. Consider that in small
cities everyone knows each other, so it could actually be more difficult to
penetrate established circles. In the end, the culture itself will create the
environment.
The goal of any Tech Hub is to
support the creation of Global Start-Ups, that it Start-Ups that scale rapidly.
Start Up Ireland[2]
is behind the efforts to position the Tech Hub as a Global player by 2020. But regardless
of official efforts, what really makes a Tech Hub? In the end, it is about the
people. The Tech Hub’s success will depend on the local entrepreneurs, but also
on the ability to attract foreign entrepreneurs with great ideas and purposes,
and quickly integrate it into the community. This will depend on the spirit of
the community itself. So you are an entrepreneur looking for your NeXT, exiting
destination to launch your business? Well, money or tax breaks is not so important.
What you want is to build a Network. And Networking is non-other than meeting
the right people. So, what does Dublin offer, from that perspective? You will
find a lot of places to hook up with other nerdy people, like you. The Science
Freak is a meeting point for the intellectually curious. The Pure Geek is an
Internet Café is a Geek Café to meet some cool people. And the Comic Book Geek
is a place for the city’s superhero obsessives.
Dublin’s Start-Up scene is
composed by a list of 1200 born-in-Dublin tech companies. It is significantly
cheaper than London both in salaries and in cost of living. 40% of the people
are under 30, with newly graduated being incorporated to the job market all the
time. Dublin is the bridge between Europe and the US. It is the place where US
innovation goes to scale globally, and a jumping off point into the US for
start-ups from across Europe. With a combination of skilled human resources,
location, tax breaks, and a good combination of both big and small companies,
Dublin seems like an interesting place to be… In TODAY’s Europe.
